Jake Garcia of The Black Angels explores the sounds and history of the golden era of 1960s psych and rock & roll in 13 FROM THE 13TH FLOOR. Tune in below! This playlist is updated with 13 new tracks on the 13th of each month.

13 FROM THE 13TH FLOOR:

The Bittersweets - Hurtin’ Kind
Incredible all female 60’s garage group from Dayton, Ohio.

Los Vidrios Quebrados - Una Manera De Vivir
I was recently turned on to this Chilean masterpiece by Christian Bland while on a little road trip out to West Texas. In the beginning the group learned songs from a Wulitzer jukebox at the local club and handmade their own musical instruments (stings included!) before eventually buying real guitars.

Pearls Before Swine - Images of April
A genuine psychedelic track from this NY outfit. It’s said that they all dropped LSD during the making of this record. The lead singer had a long career as a public defender until his passing in 2018.

The Byrds - Why
We can’t deny the fact that they were so amazing. This is the sound circa 1965.

Jimmy Page - Flashing Lights
There’s no other like Page. He was the go-to studio session guitar player throughout the 1960’s before going on to curate the most successful Rock group in history.

Nirvana - Rainbow Chaser
Overshadowed into further obscurity by the US Nirvana, this UK outfit was excellent. Kurt Cobaine settled for use of the name in the amount of $2000 in the 1990s.

Second Hand - A Fairytale
UK progressive pop-psych with some heart and fantasy circa 1968 .

Kevin Ayers - Girl On A Swing
Jimi Hendrix gifted Kevin Ayers a Gibson J-200 acoustic guitar on the condition that he record a record with it and the result is this debut album, “Joy of a Toy.” Ayers was also a founding member of the group Soft Machine.

Deviants - Children Of The Sky
From their debut album “Ptoof!” The members of the band met 21yr old millionaire Nigel Samuel who funded the 700pound required for the recording of the album circa 1967.

Pierre Henry - Psyche Rock
Tape manipulation from the master French composer. I would have loved to see this performance in the theater with dancers back in the day. This is still a very popular runway walk track for Fashion designers today.

Wicked Lady - Run The Night
Excellent motorcycle music circa 1969.

Nazz - See What You Can Be
Feeling easy with Todd Rundgren and gang.

Yatha Sidra - A Meditation Mass Part 2
Taking meditative music to new heights. Originally named Brontosaurus, the group soon found out that a giant dinosaur didn’t quite convey the message they were hoping for so they changed their name to the Hindu inspired Yatha Sidra. This was originally released on the German “Brain" label and can be considered a classic Krautrock album by some.

Thanks for listening. See you next time!
